Pueblo Business News of Fire Mitigation, New Exit U-Haul

The city of Pueblo is set to take another round of softening of wild fire thanks to a grant of developing the workforce of the wild fire action program overseen by the Department of Natural Resources of Colorado.

In Pueblo, the grant comes in the form of outdoor work provided by the Wildland Department of Department of the State Corrections Department of Wildland. The prisoners, supervised by DOC staff, have done softening work along Fountain Creek since 2022.

The work is done along the North Fountain Creek, as well as in numerous areas of the Arkansas River through the city of Pueblo. Prisoners’ crews are cleaning areas along the rivers of Underbrush, trees and other plants to make the area more accessible when there is a fire, as well as reducing the possibility of spreading fire by creating a fire break and landing on the ground, said Puebo Novak’s firefighters in a press release.

Prisoners’ work teams have performed an estimated value of $ 205,000, said Haley Suue Robinson, director of public affairs for the city of Pueblo. The work also gives prisoners experience and career exposure so that they can follow the mitigation of fire and forest careers when they are released from prison.

The program “has had a significant positive effect on the spread of fire in those areas. The city of Pueblo cannot express how much we appreciate that this grant has been given for three years and continuing in 2025,” Novak said, after all helps protect residents living near treated areas and their homes.
